Hurricane Dorian churned up the east coast of North Carolina during the first days of September 2019, having wavered between a category 3 and category 1 hurricane after battering much of the Bahamas. While the storm caused flooding and closed roads in and around the state, forecasters and residents noted that it wasn’t nearly as severe as hurricane Florence, which slammed the coast of North Carolina just a year ago.
As Dorian made its way up the east coast during the early hours of September 5, the storm wavered between a category 3 and category 1 status once it reached the shores of North Carolina. The storm dropped some 10 inches of rain onto the Wilmington, North Carolina, airport while many streets and roads remained closed due to flooding and downed trees.
The good news is that many major roads were able to remain open even after Dorian made its way to the state, unlike hurricane Florence the year before, which caused many major freeways to close. Wrightsville Beach and nearby rivers and creeks along the North Carolina coast also failed to see the same swelling as they did just a year ago.
While roadways were more passable than expected, many of the state’s ferries were docked after rescue operations. The route between Southport and Fort Fisher was expected to remain closed even after the storm had passed through entirely, as one of its vehicle loading ramps had failed even before Dorian arrived. NCDOT stated that Amtrak trains were expected to begin full routes again starting on Friday, September 6, although that decision could change depending on the full severity of the storm’s impact.
News agencies reported that the damage to transit was nothing like hurricane Florence, when some 1600 roads and routes were closed due to flooding, downed wired and fallen trees. NCDOT actually brought supplies into the city by ship after that storm had subsided, causing many North Carolina residents to realize that they had skirted another disaster this year with Dorian.
